That's Democritus, ancient Greek philosopher. He was the first person to postulate that matter was divided into tiny, indivisible units he called "atoms". He had no means to test his theories, of course, but nevertheless he's considered (by Greece at least) as the first "atomic scientist", hence the diagram of an atom on the other side.
