A teenager has made an unexpected find while swimming in a lake in the German Alps: a 17.6-ounce bar of gold. Police said Wednesday that they are still trying to figure out where the bar comes from and how it got into the Koenigssee lake, a popular tourist destination near Berchtesgaden on the border with Austria. The 16-year-old girl, who was on vacation, found it around 6 ˝ feet under the surface on Friday and handed it in to police. Divers on Tuesday carried out a thorough search of the area around where the bar was found, but didn't find any more gold or other valuables. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...2-story.html

H-m-m. Must have been "stolen," and whoever tossed it was in a big hurry, figuring he'd come back.

I agree with stolen. Looks like someone scrapped off the serial number.
When I first read this story though, I was thinking it might have been another Nazi gold find with some bar (or bars) dumped in the final days of World War II.

Gotta think someone was trying to hide or get rid of something at the end of WWII. Hitler and many of his cronies had houses and offices in Berchtesgaden. Read or watch Band of Brothers for an interesting account of the 101st Airborne's taking of Hitler's Eagle's Nest.

Was this area not a hangout of Hitler's inner circle during WWII?
