Hey, just thought I'd mention that, I was talking about moving the decimal on the Dollar Coin Alliance's Facebook page, and I of course, mentioned my support for the need of a 20 cent coin for between the dime and the half, and another guy posted in favor of the idea, stating that he disagreed with having no coin denomination between the dime and the half, "1-5 gaps are too big not to have a "2" denomination as well, such as 20c/$2/$20/$200" and he also said he had no idea why we had to have "25c" coins in the first place. He said he had been to Britain several times when they only had the 10p and 50p coin, and once on the day the 20p coin was finally introduced, and he said, "You could practically hear the sigh of relief from shopkeepers everywhere"

So I believe public outcry would demand a 20 cent coin, should we get rid of the penny, nickel and quarter, even though we are already used to up to four pennies at a time, I don't think it will be the same in this case.

As you probably know, we once had a 20 cent coin. It was discontinued after two years due to confusion with the quarter. I don't think that confusion between the two would happen this time around, as long we don't specify that the 20 cent coin must weigh as much as two dimes.
However, I don't believe that public opinion would sway much toward the 20 cent coin being accepted, especially if we discontinued the penny, nickel, and quarter as part of the "transition".
Just look at how much debate it's taking to decide whether or not to discontinue the humble cent.

The 20 cent coin would have succeeded in the 19th century if there was no quarter. The coins just are not meant to be together.

At this time a 20 cent coin is impractical. Should the US eliminate the 5 cent coin a 20 cent coin makes more sense, especially more than a quarter would. That said, with current buying power I think a dime-half dollar-dollar combination would be sufficient. It would be easier to just drop the quarter than introduce a new denomination like the 20 cent piece.
