Well, I paid for a few items at a local Family Dollar store with $2 bills, and the cashier immediately placed them under the till, and I said "Aren't you going to put those back into circulation?" and she said "No. They go back to the bank. People don't like $2 bills" as she proceeded to "pen test" them and I asked her "Oh, they make you test those for counterfeits?" and she said "No. We just don't get that many" (I don't see how that would be an excuse to pen test the $2s SHEESH!). I then said "What about halves? Do people like those?" and she said "No. And I hate it when people bring in those dollar coins" and I asked, "You mean the smaller ones, right? Don't you like the Ikes?" and she just said she hated dollar coins in general. And I told her that I hate $1 bills like dollar coins because they are cleaner. And finally, get this. Just as I suspected would happen with the failure to redesign the $1, $2 or both bills, the cashier said "People confuse $2 bills with $1 bills" and I told her, "That is why, at least the $2 bill SHOULD have been redesigned, even if they were not going to redesign the $1 bill" then I told her the story about the vending industry opposing and having Congress block the redesign of the $1 bill, because of their machine reprogramming issues. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Fox 08/12/2015 9:47 pm

Where do you get $2 bills in the first place?

I get $2 bills from my bank at face value I moved this thread to the US Paper Money section. This thread is more about $2 bills, and dollar coins barely get a mention.

I have my credit union order $2 bills, and halves, and you can do the same with dollar coins, but I don't like getting out dollar coins too much, as many cashiers tried to refuse them from me, because, why stock a cash drawer with two forms of the same denomination (dollar coin & $1 bill) and there is currently no $2 coin or $0.50 bill, to compete with those two denominations, so they are more widely accepted, due to that fact, which is why I hope the USA Act passes, so that we will only have dollar coins and no $1 bills. (And hopefully, $2 coins and no $2 bills, no longer than five years after the $1 bill is completely phased out).

If you are on the other side of the counter you do hate 50c coins, $1 coins, and $2 bills simply because you don't have a place to put them.
Most modern cash drawers are designed to take 5 denominations of coins and 5 denominations of bills. The furthest right space for the 50c coin is often used for the registers keys, not coins.
So when you get those odd denominations, you have no where to put them and they are a hassle.
The worst part, however, is that most retail establishments make each person assigned to a drawer cash in and cash out at the end of their shift to insure accuracy on collection and prevent losses.
A FORM is used with a listing of the number of each bill and each coin counted at the end of the shift.
Guess what...they have no place on those forms for 50c coins, you have to combine your $1 coins with $1 bills, and there is no place for a $2 bill.
So when it comes time to cash out a register, those forms (mostly now computerized) won't "accept" those "odd" denominations and you have to end up putting them all under the $1 column, even though you don't have that many $1 bills.
It's a pain. So I understand completely when a cashier just about turns purple when someone is "cute" and pays with a few dollar coins, a couple of 50c coins and a stack of $2 bills. I've seen it, always from collectors trying to get this "stuff" back into circulation, and NO ONE at the store appreciates it.

I had a clerk at the gas station yesterday try and find a watermark on a $2 bill.

I hate dollar coins too. Unless they are large dollars. But I love $2 and halves.

Kill the one dollar note and start using the one dollar coins. Some may say this was a gratuitous post, but deal!

I think we should make 50 cent pieces a bronze-color, like the Romanian 50 bani coins. The "golden dollars" are horrible. I've seen Zincolns from the 90s in better condition. Maybe due to the manganese in the coin.
