I don't usually collect nickels but I got a handful today. One stands out from the rest in color and I was wondering if this is common to come across in collecting them. What may have caused this? Does it make it generally not desirable? Look how it stands out in the stack of the other ones I got from same year/1 year apart! I weighed it 5.0 grams vs another @ 5.1
Yeah, not uncommon at all for Buffs to become brown. And it's a common date you have, so the value really isn't changed as it isn't that high in the first place.
If you look at lots of Buffalo nickels, you will see this more frequently. It isn't that rare to find a darkly or "wood grain" toned nickel. In higher grades, say EF-40 and above, a nice original tone for a scarcer date is preferable, but wouldn't usually fetch too much more than its bright cousin.
