I have no idea what happened to my nickel. I took a look at it and thought, it looks a bit "weak" When I gave it a bit of pressure, this is what happened....

No longer even a "spender"....LOL

was it put in some kind of acid bath?

Hard to tell from the pictures, but the surface looks like it was eaten away by something.

Hard to focus on "bits and pieces". There appears to be some green in it, too. Never seen anything like it, weird!

I found one (pre81 - nickel) that was hollow on the inside, weighed like 1.8~2g there was a hole on one side of the rim. could not understand how or why. its sitting in a 2x2 in one of my many boxes somewhere....

Sure gives a new take on " Pieces of eight" . It is a sewer coin by the looks of it. City crew used to bring all kinds of this muck to us when we had a shop.

Potential counterfeit made out of inferior material? That's the only explanation I can think of.
