We all have bought coins that we waaaaay over-paid for , wish we hadn't bought it, but refuse to sell because we wouldn't get enough money for it . I've bitten the bullet on this several times in the past and have shed all that I had in this category over the years to dealers (don't worry, no one here has any of that stuff from me...that I know of! ). If you've got one of these nice little albatrosses...show it off!

Prethen ... you show me yours and I'll show you mine. OK here's a Walker that is obviously AT and I ignored that when I got it on ebay. The AT hides the flaws that you can only see with magnification with the coin held at an angle. It's probably worth about $15 and I paid more than 3x that. I have much bigger mistakes, but I want to start small.

Ohhhhh. If I could just turn the clock back and not have purchased all those cleaned Franklin and Walker halves when I first started out. But they were so nice and shiny... My Precious...........

This is a great thread...if I may, can I ask those posting to explain why the coin is an albatross? It would help a beginner like me immensely if I knew "paid to much", "overgraded", etc.
Thanks.

SuperDave, Nice "cast" Seated $. How long ago did you pick that up. And for jbakic ... mine had artificial toning masking fatal flaws.

I have a couple of current Albatrosses (now that I think about it). One is my habitual purchasing of the Mint's Silver Proof Sets. Other than 1999 (and maybe 2001), these sets have basically lost value but I feel compelled to keep buying them to at least complete the State Quarters program (2009 now!). When I want to sell these I'll eventually probably lose on most of them. Plus, they take up a ton of room. Maybe I look at them once per year, although, I think they are very pretty to look at. The other, is the State Quarter program itself. Every time a new one comes out, I spent a bunch of time looking through rolls to select 6 of the nicest for my daughter's set, my set, and the 4 I choose to put in tubes. The thing that kills me about this is that for all those Gems I'm putting away, they'll likely never be able to be sold for much more than 1-2 times face. All that time! The State Quarter map does look pretty cool, especially when it will be all done by the end of the year.

If we are considering "new" coins as albatrosses as well........then MY list is ever increasing ! Old beat up ones that I overpaid for and just thought I had to have............ that group is big enough ! I've won many a bid at small coin auctions not getting a close look at what I was bidding on, and then had my "trophy" placed in front of me, discovering that much to my dismay it would be in HORRIBLE condition ! Of course I've now learned to ask to see it or have it already documented and described and noted before the auction even begins ! I have (in every denomination) an "albatross" .......clear back to the early 1800's ! The learning process can be very costly.............

Just out of curiosity SuperDave, is there a way to tell by looking at that picture that the coin is a cast copy?

jbakic OK ... don't call me "SuperDave" ... he's a legend here, I'm the "not SuperDave". The key is on the obverse shield. There's a gouge through the 'L' in Liberty. This is a diagnostic for cast copies in the series. The dates changed, but that gouge remained. 23

Only because the doubling is a widely-noted counterfeit, of which there are dozens, if not hundreds, of copies. I, of course, did not know that at the time. It was my first non-Morgan dollar purchase, a few years ago, and not knowing how difficult Seated dollars are in the first place, I snagged it because of my interest in errors. It's my belief that the seller, who was at an APO address, was unaware as well. The seller immediately offered a refund, which I declined because of the educational value I've been able to use it for.

I might add that "Not Super Dave" is absolutely my daddy with regard to anything Seated - his modesty, although a winning virtue, masks someone who's forgotten more than I've ever known about much of numismatics.
