Hi. I came across a 1981 quarter that weighed 5.85 grams....is there any significance to that? Wrong planchet? There is no excess of crud build up or any other foreign debris. Any help/info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I was trying to look up specifications on the quarter and what mint tolerances where for them but could not find anything excep weight and on my scale which only does tenth of a gram its basically 5.7 so it isn't off by much hence why I was checking tolerances but we will see if anyone else has a better knowlege or resource

Gotcha. Thanks for the reply and for checking on it for me. I weigh most of my pocket change monthly along with checking for any other errors (let it all build up and then go through it maybe once or twice a month) and this is highest weight for a quarter I've seen so far. Some have come close but have had build up on them...ie crud, gum (lol), etc. so...thought I would ask. Am still a newbie and love using this forum to help me figure it all out. Am curious about the "Mint tolerances" you speak of... THANKS again!

Coins that go slightly under or over normal tolerances are errors but get no respect from error collectors as they look normal to the eye.

Maximum weight to still be within spec is 5.897 grams so your coin is within tolerance range.
