I bought this from my lcs a while back. I know it is an Andrew Jackson campaign token, it is brass, and after doing some research I looks like it is from 1824. It is holed, and says "hero of new Orleans " on the reverse.

That's a pleasing, VF specimen you have there, georgescoins. These are often seen in lower grades, typically holed and sometimes silver plated.

I've long been drawn to this series, the early Jackson pieces, including the Hard Times and later Civil War token issues. I luckily picked up an mint state specimen with "The Nation's Pride" reverse at a show last year. Along with the "Hero of New Orleans" and "The Nation's Good" reverses, these make for a historic mini-set of our country's first political campaign medalets.

@ExoGuy thanks for the info, I've seldom found info on it with internet searches. Does it have value?

The 1824 Andrew Jackson campaign medals, of which a few different types exist, are considered by most to be the first actual presidential campaign medals produced to promote a candidate prior to an election. Prior to this the political medals commemorated inaugurations, deaths, etc. I have the one you have (DeWitt # AJACK 1824-1)as well as a "The Nation's Good" variety (DeWitt # AJACK 1824-4).

The Sullivan/DeWitt book doesn't give rarities or values, but I've seen these listed several times on ebay, so I don't think they're especially rare. I can't remember what I paid for mine but it was probably $50-60 for one in a condition similar to mine or yours.

I've been collecting the early presidential campaign tokens for a while, and some are much rarer and more costly(and more difficult to find).

Good summary there, Mackwork. As to the value, I'd suggest that the OP's piece is worth $75-$100. I've bid on a few this past year and been unsuccessful. A choice AU-55 piece, with "The Nation's Good" reverse, just realized $357 in Hayden's auction.
