Hello all,

I was sorting through some of my less organized coin collection and I came across three "Green Cheese Penny / Moon Money" tokens. I don't have a camera handy, but this is the token in question:

http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/...-duid-353427

I got these coins from an old estate sale that I helped to appraise and liquidate--the buying LCS rejected these along with a few other coins, which were given to me. I Googled around for a while, and it seems that they are pretty commonplace, but nobody is willing to cough up an explanation of where and when these came from (I am assuming a private US company and circa 1969-71) nor their purpose (arcade tokens, play money, or just novelties).

I call upon the CCF hive mind--does anybody have the scoop on these tokens?

I tried your link, but got a goog warning. This auction has a TN14
designation (whatever that is). Most auctions are around a BIN of 15.00,
but I haven't looked if any have sold. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Moon-Money-...111418317101

Yeah, ebay and similar sites are positively flooded with these things. The asking price is anywhere from $1-15, but I have never seen a completed auction, and every listing is completely devoid of any explanation of what a "green cheese penny" even is. All three in my collection (put together from ca. 1975-2012) are in 2x2s and priced at $0.35

They seem to be something of an enigma.

They were the copper round versions of that time period since it has the moon lander on it. as the current crop of copper rounds being sold told at the guns shows and flea markets.

They are stamping them out in 1oz,3/4,1/2 1/4 sizes and humping them as the cash of the future coming apocalypse. Of course you are better off buy rolls of wire or copper pipe and fitting or in some other usable forms. Or better yet something people will actual need like ammo and guns! From the number that seems to be out there they were stamped out in the 10,000s probably closer to thye $1.00/$2.00 LCS bargain bin.
Rest in Peace

Lets see, what was it that happened on July 20, 1969.

Oh - yeah - we landed on the moon.

This token was created as a conversation piece and I know you could get them in the ten cent "capsule" gum machines, because I did when I was QUITE YOUNG.

If they were sold or distributed in some other way, I've never seen or heard of any other use.

They are common as dirt. Well, not as common as dirt. But common.

Thanks all! I knew that they were too common to be worth anything, and a gumball prize makes perfect sense!
