I think this is one of a series of Royal Jetons that were popular collector's pieces in France. They would be similar to the non circulating commemoratives that mints are so fond of these days.

This one is Louis XIV and seems to commemorate a gathering or party, if my Latin is correct the reverse translates to The God of All Hosts.
must have been one hellashish shin-dig.

It should be silver and was sold at a premium to 'collectors'. It was an effective and popular fund raising scheme

These have been widely copied but also I think Monnaie de Paris did some official restrikes. The difference is on the rim. One has a rounded edge, the other a straight edge. Can't remember which is which though.
