I recently purchased the following two coins, but I am having trouble researching them. Can anyone tell me anything about them, please? I don't even know what I am looking at? Second one looks like APOLLODOTUS I, 160-150 BC
The first I am not so sure about but fear not I know Chrsmat has a soft spot for these square ones and can probably tell you all about them.

I agree the second one does appear to be Apollodotus I, but it could also be Strato I. Without a clearer legend difficult to say for sure. The first one is going to be a bit more difficult to ID without a clear legend. Anoob is also good with these so he might have an idea.

TC, I think your i.d.'s are probably correct. On the first (Strato I) coin, the remaining little mark just behind the neck of the obverse portrait seems to be a remnant of the club of Hercules, which is consistent with the obverses of coins in this series. The figure on the reverse would be a winged Nike standing right, holding palm and wreath. For reference you can see: http://coinindia.com/galleries-strato1.htmlThe Apollodotos I coin shows Apollo standing with arrow and bow on the obverse, and a tripod with monogram on the reverse. For reference: http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=139373 and http://coinindia.com/MIG0209p-A1047.jpg. The obverse legends on both coins are Greek; the reverses are Kharoshthi...specifics can be found at coinindia.

Thank-you, Bob. You have given me all I need to know. (Esp 'coinindia.com'.) Not my Id's but the seller's. Knowing nothing about these coins I bought them for their unusual shape. Now, I can write an attribution from this information, you have provided, and learn at the same time. Thanks, again.
