I have an 1835 Half Cent with the "1" missing in the date, and was wondering what might have caused it and how to label it. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Looks like someone took it. Did you misplace the one?

All jokes aside, most likely a Grease Filled Die.

I'm wondering if the 1 in the date was "professionally" removed. Why would someone do this? Perhaps, it was done to create an 1831 dated Half Cent. Just a thought ....

Grease filled die, not all that common where a complete digit is filled in with grease, I have various 2 cent pieces that show this characteristic. Neat a worth maybe a small premium to a variety collector.

In this photo the 1 in the date shows up more than it does in hand, due to my lighting. I also have a bunch with all or partial letters missing on the reverse.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that it was a filled die and not some crazy hack job.
Rest in Peace

Nice example of an 835 Half Cent. I agree with Grease Filled Die.

*** Edited by Staff to remove YELLING. All capital letters is the internet version of yelling. Please don't do it in titles or posts. ***

This coin looks altered to me you can see scratch marks where it was removed someone tried to make it look like it was Struck Through Grease
