Just picked this up. Is this possibly one of a kind, or is there a source for an attribution?

Not one of a kind as I have two others. However, the offset of yours is pretty extreme. I like it.

Must have been a bad week at the mint, because there are a lot of double profile 1834 cents.

1834 N-2 small 8 large stars an R-1 coin and it is frequently seen with double profiles. The double profile is caused by the fact that these were struck on the old screw presses in the old mint and they were wearing out. This resulted in looseness in some of the parts of the press. These could be tightened but would eventually loosen again. On today's coins it would be called Machine Doubling damage.

A nifty example even if it's pretty common.
