Very interesting, MedveD. I see that on the Latvia 10 Latu 1995: "Julia Maria" Sailing Ship pictured on Numista the griffin has no tail whatsoever. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces32879.html
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
At present, five main varieties of the 10 latu 1995 "Julia Maria" coin have been identified. They are distinguished by the tufts on the griffin's tail and the branch on which it stands:
1. Three tufts, solid branch
2. Three tufts, branch in two parts
3. Two tufts, branch in two parts
4. Two tufts, branch in two parts, a thin projection on the right part
