Hi
My grandmother recently passed away and when going through her things we found this coin in a suede bag tucked away in her jewelry box.
My grandfather was at one time an avid coin collector, but I truly don't know much about the authenticity or value of this piece.
I should also mention it is on a Coin holder necklace and can be removed if needed for better verification
Any help you can give would be great
Thank you in advance

This is not a Morgan but a $5 Half Eagle.

Have you had anybody look at it?

I would NOT try to remove it from the bezel as it would easily be damaged in the process.

Also, I would not clean or polish it in any way.

This 1882-CC $5 Half Eagle looks fairly high grade to my eye. Let's see what others have to say.

Sorry, like I said I really dont know very much about this coin. Thank you for the correction!...
I have not had anyone look at it yet, I am hoping to next week. Hoping to get an idea of what it is before I find a reputable coin collector to speak with about it. Hoping to pass it down to my son.

Looks AU details, scratched, maybe cleaned, but a really nice coin nonetheless. I'd guess the coin on it's own is worth $900-$1k, and the bezel/necklace appear gold as well.

Is the 1883 the same as an 1882? I only say because you mentioned 83
Rest in Peace

That bezel looks brand new, is it? The coin is a much better date but does have a scratch and likely other surface impairments and so is likely worth under $1,000 but is still multiples of its $274 melt value. If you are good with precision screwdrivers and confident in your manual dexterity then unscrew the bezel over a soft cloth and take a couple more pics of the coin.

The coin is easily removed from this type (screw top) bezel by using a jeweler's screw driver. Care should be taken not to slip and scratch the coin but I have removed several with out any problems what so ever. The coin looks like an AU-55 details coin. The scratch is the biggest problem I see but the coin after being used as jewelry most likely has wipe marks or been cleaned harshly. Still a nice CC Mint gold coin.

Details since it'll probably have jewelry damage.

Looks like it has been cleaned at some point. As others have stated, don't try to remove the coin yourself. Take this to your local coin shop and let them look at it for removal. Nice looking half eagle!
