I found this when I was allot younger

I redound it in my wardrobe the other day and googled the markings determined it was a

Potosi Bolivia 8 reals 1696
But how do I determine if it's genuine?
Does anyone know the value

I agree it is a Class 3 numismatic forgery. There appears to be part of a raised seam line visible on the second photo. Sorry but at least it is a nice looking copy.

Here's a typically bad (double struck) but genuine Potosi cob from the same period to compare with.

Two notable differences

-The detail on the figuring and lettering is much sharper edged. This is characteristic of struck coins. The soft-detailed coin you found looks like a casting. I used to have a similar one made for a souvenir key fob.

-The level of detail on Potosi cobs was extremely poor, and got worse as time went on. A coin with as much detail as the one you found would be an extreme rarity.
