Hello everyone! I found this very nickel last night and I'm not sure what to make of it. It almost looks toned yellow/orange/red/blue. If I were a better photographer I'd be able to capture just how beautiful this coin looks in person. The first image which was taken to show the luster almost makes it look like it's made of gold (which is not how it is in person). It's very lustrous, with cartwheeling, and does not look plated or burned to me. I'm keeping it regardless if it's altered because of how stunning and strange it looks. Maybe I can manage to capture better pictures tomorrow.     Edited by BlueSolo

What's your avatar made of? it looks the same color. What is cartwheel? I've been hearing that lately.

My avatar is a gold plated buffalo. The first image does look a lot like it's gold plated too. Cartwheel is how the luster shines in the light. When you move the coin in circles imagine a line of reflected light that rotates. Tricky to explain, take a 2015 nickel or something and test it out and you should see it. It's a good way to tell the luster of older coins; since it may have all the details and not any scratches, if the coin was improperly handled I believe the oils from your fingers disturb this original mint shine and leave the coin less desirable despite the detail. How interesting. I don't know if they still change the colors of coins in high school science or not. That's my best guess. I would keep it too :D

That is cool durkastani! Couldn't that be a legitimate toned proof penny too? I know pennies turn red/pink as in your photo
Again, regardless the authenticity I have a section in my 2x2 book for coins that just look interesting

Hehe. If you found that in circulation, how excited were you to see the golden rim when you opened that roll? That gold rim of the nickel I found had me fooled for a moment!

Haha, I noticed the scratches but didn't think about that! Bank tellers ARE always very nice to roll searchers, even though I always feel guilty when I come in asking for boxes each week or so. They are still always happy to go to the vault to pull out the boxes when they don't have them ready though, when they can just as easily say they don't have any

Yes, most tellers are pretty friendly. They have always been good to me, even at the bank where I turn them in. Btw, I bet you could get an accurate color on your coin using daylight - not direct, but through a window. Getting late Blue, once again good talking with you. ltr

I'm thinking that nickel took a few cycles in a washing machine with soaps and stuff or it was a wish. It's just a guess though. Nickel seems to react easily to surfactants and chemicals in laundry and fountain water
