Poll Question
2008 Red Book indicates for 20 year anniversary. the "W" mint mark for all West point coins would be on reverse. Further it says only reverse proofs from P would not have a mint mark. My 2006 does not have a "W" but it doesn't appear to be a reverse proof. What gives?

If your 2006 Eagle does not have a mint mark, it is the standard issue investment-grade bullion coin. Those are minted at West Point too but not mint marked. These are not sold directly by the US Mint, only available from secondary dealers.

2006 was the first year the Mint produced special collector version burnished die Eagles with a W mint mark. These were sold directly by the US Mint for $19.95 and were also included in the 20th Anniv Silver Eagle set and the two coin 20th Anniv Gold and Silver Eagle set. 470,000 total were minted.

The 2006 proofs were the same as always with a W mint mark. These were sold separately by the Mint and also one was included in the 20th Anniv set.

Another new finish was introduced in 2006 as well. The key of the 20th Anniv set was a special reverse proof minted at Philadelphia with the P mint mark.

If you are keeping track, that makes a grand total of four different Silver Eagles minted in 2006.

i talked with a friend today who owns 500 2006 burnished eagles. he believes strongly that this coin will see exponential growth w/in 5 years b/c of the low mintage.

Hi,

How does one find the final mintage on the 2006 -W (special uncirculated new version) of the silver American Eagle ? I can't find it on the U.S. Mint site.

And, what was the final mintage ?

Thanks for the reply.
