I just bought my first box of nickels (while waiting for my 2 boxes of halves to come in next Thurs)... I have the Red Book and marked down the key dates. Any suggestions from you who've already been doing this for a while. I would like to add to my list the dates you find really hard to find....please don't joke around (1971 Kennedy's for example!) Thanks, Laura

42-45 War Nickels are 35% silver and hard to find in circulation. 39-D and 50-D are tough as well.

I search nickels on a regular basis and have had some pretty cool finds. Just today I pulled to Buffalo (1930, 1936) common dates but nice finds none-the-less. Here's what I look for:
pre-60--any date in the 50s or below is worth saving in my opinion 1968D--relatively low mintage (considering) and probably will be worth a few bucks in the coming years 42-45 Silver Nickels--silver...enough said ;)
38S, 39D, 50D are what I consider key 38D, 39S, 50, 51s, 55 are what I consider semi-key I've pulled two 51S and one 55, but none of the others while searching $1000 of nickels.
Um...keep your eye out for foreigns if your into that sort of thing. Canadians show up almost probaly two to a box on average and Bahama/Burmuda tend to show up everyonce in a while.
Its a fun series to get into--not as silver rich as halves but I find it much mor exciting...you never know what you'll find!

I agree with Gary, not much $$$ in searching nickels but they are FUN! I'm currently searching and keeping track of going through 25000 rolls (1 million coins) of nickels, and it's lots of fun! You can buy $100 boxes from a bank, or you can get customer rolls. The bank boxes I get here in KY are put together by Brinks, and the 50 rolls inside the box are shrinkwrapped in clear plastic. All of the banks that Brinks supply coin to deliver their excess coins to them for re-rolling. Therefore, you can get a much better mix of coins from these boxes, as they come from multiple sources. On the other hand, customer rolls might be already searched, and you might find nothing old; might find all possible errors removed, OR... you might hit the mother lode and find something turned in that has been sitting in a coffee can in the basement for the past 40 years!
So, weigh the pros and cons of what to buy, go get some rolls and most importantly, share with us here what you find, and HAVE FUN!!

A 1950-D would be a very rare find in a box of nickels!

Laura, I've asked this before but nobody ever answers me. How many rolls of nickels are there in a box, and how much does it weight? I can barely heft a canvas mint bag with 20 rolls of nickels in it. (I am an old woman with a bad back and heart trouble.) I would love to order a box of nickels, but I'd never get it out of the bank, so why bother? How do you get it home? Jan

Jan -
50 rolls in a box, and I believe it's around 22 pounds.

Janknez, Hi! I too have a very bad back and I take my garndson's stroller with me (empty). No one questions a woman with an empty stroller. I just load up the coins and cover them up and out I go. Piece of cake! Gussyboy1 (Connie)

I'm glad you got the answer you needed. I was at lunch and away from my desk. I think the baby stroller thing is a great idea, surely someone from the bank could help get it from the stroller into your car for you, I would hope.
By the way, I just came across my first S nickel !! A 1969 S. Laura
