Anyone seen one of these before or know anything about it or why the cross was stamped on there? I saw this coin on a website a few years ago sadly it was sold and tried finding it on the net just to show you guys. Are these popular or even really rare? Heres the website I just found it on. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...ss-111915028

The counter stamp could be a lot of things.
There are several crosses with a very similar shape

Certain versions of the crusaders cross

The iron cross and Knights cross
http://www.worldwar2aces.com/iron-cross.htm

The war cross
The Victorian Cross
The Malteese Cross

There are many varients.
As FE cents were not in regular circulation durring WW 1 I doubt if there was any true German connection. I think It was just someone with idle time and some punches in the late 1800's.

It was also the 5th Corps insignia during the Civil War, could be some connection?

Unfortunately it could have been punched by anyone at any time so without some kind of documentation it is just a damaged coin of minimal value.

You know that the Daughters of Confederate Vets gave little crosses to old confederate vets that look like German crosses. My great, great, grandfather is posing for a pic wearing his little cross medal. The confederates did not give medals during the war. I am just guessing since the coin is 1858 and was probably around after the civil war.

I've not seen this one before. The tiny size and crafted design of this stamp gives me the impression that it may be a silversmith's or jeweler's touch mark, used to label his work. A search of known/listed marks might unveil the issuer.
