Can anyone tell me what type of error this is? I have seen copper annealed lamination error nickels but this one is unusual as the planchet appears to have been deformed before the coin was minted. Please tell me what you believe would be the proper definition for this coin?

The proper definition would be environmental damage, not an error. The most likely cause is a corrosive liquid which led to the puddling pattern.

No - it simply stains it, in effect.

Five cent coins are 75% copper, nothing needs to be transmuted. Corrosive conditions can cause copper leaching to occur.
