I was thinking about starting a type collection of coins of the same denomination but from Philadelphia and every US Branch mint. What would be the most affordable to get denomination wise. I know Philadelphia, Denver, San Franscico, And New Orleans will be easy. I'm worried about finding something for Carson City. I want something in a corresponding size from the Manilla branch mint too. I know I'm limited to silver coins. Did I miss any other mint.
I know I'm missing the two gold only mints but no way I can afford them at the moment. Though if the coins were about the same size as the silver ones that be ok. I'm mostly interested in mint marks. Edited by Bertensgrad 09/05/2015 5:04 pm

Dahlonega Mint if you go for certain gold types Most affordable? Including "O" coin? I'm biased to Seated coinage, specifically dimes. But what grade level collection are you talking? There's lots of questions to pose about your goal. If you're talking $60 a coin budget and want high AU to MS, than Morgan dollars have enough common years in mint marks. If you're talking Seated coinage or Barber coinage, for dimes for instance, which would cover 4 mints, than you could get into some pricy multi-hundred dollar purchases unless you go to a VF range. Whatever you do, my best advice is consistency in grade level. IMO, it makes for more eye appeal when you don't have one super luster coin and one mid range VF and one F etc... This is just me however. Good luck and post pics as you go.

What about the mints at Charlotte, Dahlonega, or West Point? The first two would probably be out with a small budget but a WP should be included For Carson City you can get a decent dime pretty cheaply for around $20 or even a worn morgan for $60ish

You're best off with Seated silver for Carson City, and in a general sense pricing for grade and availability both get more favorable as denomination lessens. Check out our US Coin Facts section linked on the left for mintages and go from there.

I think I understand what you are trying to do, but there might be a problem with having the same type for all the coins unless you go for Morgans. For example, Carson City closed in 1893 and Denver started coins in 1906. The only coin that was made at CC, P, D, O & S was the Morgan dollar (and that's only because of the 1921 Morgans for Denver). Now if you want to just go with a denomination, I'd say dimes would probably be easiest/cheapest. You'd have to do some SLDs (CC only had these), some Barbers, and if you want, you can even get West Point (W) in that way too!

I just went snooping ih the coin facts section and it looks like dimes would be your best bet if you didnt want the same type of coin just the same denomation. Every mint could be done with a diffrent type of dime

I agree, Dimes would be your best bet and a cool set it would be! The set could look like:
Capped Bust Dime: Philadelphia Seated Liberty Starred Obverse: New Orleans Seated Liberty Legend Obverse: Carson City Barber: San Francisco or Denver Mercury: San Francisco or Denver Roosevelt: West Point
If some day you wanted to add Charlotte and Dahlonega this can be done with nearly dime size gold pieces.

just wondering if you have considered the "micro" S or the type 1&2 S for 79 or the post 80 "P"

It is tempting to keep it to dimes. I don't think I could use a micro s unless I used a normal s merc for comparison. Philidelphia would be good. Not sure I ever do most of the variations though.
