S. H. Straub ran a sporting goods store in Kalamazoo in the late 1800s-early 1900s.

Nice find. I do not know the significance of "D DL 272." Possibly an inventory identification or model description of a gun, which they apparently made and sold. Looks like it would have been a holed hanging (ring) tag.

It matches the years he was known to be in business, so I would consider that to be fairly likely.

More likely it is a tool check for an employee of a company the D DL would be the employee's initials and the 272 would be the idea number. Or it can be an employee check to signify if the employee is on premise or not. Like the miners checks when they are in the mine or out. They were used in other industries that were dangerous and had a chance of catastrophic ending for plant and employee's.
