I guess for me using e-bay and others like it, is the lack of researching other forms. I believed that heritage and others like them were for high grade, high priced coins. I have never looked at them but maybe I should. My coins are of lower grade (AU) and below with not to many key coins. I guess my coins reflect my purchasing budget. My preference is to buy coins I can look at in hand, but am limited to the places I am able to do this, so I go online and purchase sometimes.

ND it all boils down to this! If you, or Catman, were to offer me a coin, say a $200 coin. I know there is going to be shipping, hopefully reasonable, and I expect that but, if either one of you tell me I got to pay another $20 just for doing business with you, well I don't want the coin any longer. Yes, ebay has sellers fees and final value fees which I know up front, as a seller, I will have to pay. But as a buyer I will pay my BID plus postage and thats it. The only REAL thing you absolutely MUST do on ebay is read the fine print. I find $8 to $15 to ship one coin a little distracting to say the least. I guess what I am trying to say is most of the auction houses sell high quality coins which will, for the most part, bring their true value or more so I think the seller should be the one to PAY the fees. The current process, in my opinion, is backwards and I don't agree with it!

As a seller, the fees on ebay are lower also. I start the better coins that I sell at $9.95. My listing fee for this coin is 70 cents. My final value fees are 5.25% scaling down to less as the price goes up. Add another 3% to the fees if the winner pays by Paypal. As I understand it, consignment fees to the Heritage or B&M is 15%. This is higher than I pay now and I don't have any control over the auctions themselves. I've seen quite a few that I was disappointed with the pics. Also, even on ebay, we're getting good money for our better coins and OFTEN have sold a coin for more than it went for on Heritage. The rest of the time, we're right in the center of the prices realized at Heritage.

A few years ago I bought a few Morgans thru Teletrade and the final costs with the buyers fees was still a shock even when I knew up front they would be added on. Then there was also the shipping, handling and insurance so in the end I was a bit peeved at the whole process. I have attempted, a couple of times, to bid in a couple internet auctions (auction housed) and the bidding is so fast, with floor bidding going on as well, and you are a tad bid slow hitting that mouse your bid of $200 could actually be $1100 within the split second it takes to get there. I know as it happened to me! Needless to say THAT GOT MY ATTENTION very quickly but some kind bidder on the floor took that $200 coin away from me for $1400. Bidding was hot and furious and not one coin, in the hour or so I watched, went anywhere near normal values as many were double and triple what one would expect to pay. I decided real quick that I wasn't playing that game again. I really like to see what I am buying and if I can't it must be from a reputable seller with a money back guarantee. I really can't recall the last time I ever sent anything back as I make every effort to buy that which I am pretty sure of at any given time. And, I bid accordingly.

In the last few weeks I've found this out by buying a few New Orleans dollars in 64 on Teletrade because they seem like a good value. What ND says is true, the final price with all fees, postage, etc. added on is technically the final price. But I think there's a psychological thing going on too when one sits there with a greysheet and tends to minimize buyer's fees, shipping, etc. in one's mind and still bid up to or a little over greysheet bid or ask! Then it comes time to pay the piper. With ebay you don't have to pay that buyer's fee piper. And, Teletrade recently raised their buyer's fee to 12% I think. (actually, the 12% isn't all that bad, but my purchases are small, so the minumum add on of 8 bucks kicks in which tends to add up!)

I don't like the people that own either one of those companies. I especially don't like the owners of Heritage.
In the past when Bowers & Merena really was Bowers and Merena I did buy coins from them. In any case I have lost all faith in the grading system used for coins. I prefer exonumia where there is lots of room to breath and many areas where grading has little or no impact.
If things were ever to change (not even holding my breath) with the Tower of Bable grading system I might buy coins again. But if I were to buy in big auctions it would be ANR.

I have always assumed that the big auction houses were more for the collectors with considerable money to spend. My assumptions also are that ebay is easier to use, and the fees are much less.

Bobby, Let your emotions down for a minute. How many times have you and I had this SAME discussion? I am not picking on you or anybody else. But since you have asked: I will use you as the example. You have "auctioned" slabbed material for LESS money than if you would have simply picked up the phone and called me for a buy price. We both know this to be true, because you and I have discussed this matter before. Need examples: 1838 Silver capped bust half dollar ANACS Graded MS61 Your price? $1009.09 My buy price? $1300.00 1861 Silver Liberty Seated half dollar ANACS Graded AU53 Yours? $224.72 Mine? $275.00 US COIN 1794 LIBERTY CAP COPPER S46 R2 ANACS VF30 OLD Yours? $1,276.07 Mine? $1800.00 Now did you make money on these sales? Sure, but you could have made more without the fees by simply offering them to me or hundreds of other dealers. Susan, Consignment fees are 5%. Buyer fees are 15%. Metalman, How many times have I offered to "purchase" any coin for any forum member?

ND You have offered and I have used your sevice !! and was very grateful for it !! I'm sure the time will come when I will use it again. But not so much for the common type coins as before, I have a few coins coming up on my list that I will not buy from an auction such as ebay or another format of similar guild. I have not bought a coin from ebay for a few months now, But I have purchaed from another auction format several times in the same period. These coins are relitively common and basically a no brainer. Rick
