The near date is only found on the P mint coins. There are no Near date 79-D's known.

Easiest way to identify the near date if you don't have pictures is to look at the distance between the bottom of the 1 and the rim. On the Near date it is about 1/2 the width of the upright of the 1 away from the rim. On the far date it is 1 1/2 to twice the width of the 1 away from the rim. once you learn that you can identify them at a glance.

I just looked on Heritage coins to see if the near date was the new look for the 1980 forward. It does show that from they were all wide rim from that time forward (1980-1981)

Thank you Coop. That's interesting. So I should keep it if it was one of the few far dates with the 1979 P's?

The far date, narrow rim is normal. The close date, wide rim are the collectables for the 1979-P.

I wondered if the the 1979-S had had the normal rim on the reverse? So I did a comparison of the two proof examples 1979-s and the 1981-S and both appear to be wide rims on the reverse. So the 1979 dollars only have the far date narrow rim on the obverses. Who knew?

Here is what the proof 1979-S looks like with the two different rims. (common for this year)
