Do errors, such as off center stamping, on modern coins have any effect on their value. For example, I happened to get a 1997 quarter as change today that is off center.

depends how far off center it is. errors do carry a premium no matter what year they ae from. The amount of premium depends on how severe the error is and what kind of error it is. pictures of your quater will help establish a better idea on estimating if it's high to low or no value error.

Here an image of the quarter. It is a pretty bad scan, but I think you can get a good idea of the offset.

Actually, I believe this is probably a misaligned die. Is the reverse off center by the same amount? If the reverse is normal, it's a misaligned die.

Either way, it unfortunately doesn't carry any premium to most people. It's nice to hang onto one or two for an example though.

The reverse is also off. Not quite as much as the front, but pretty close.

Ouzo, here's a picture of one of my off-centers. I was told it may command a value of around $20.

As already noted yours is not offset sufficiently enough to warrant a high value. If you get a copy of the Red Book, 2008 edition, pages 390 to 392 there is a listing and photos of the more common errors in coins. Page 394 also gives an approximate value on those types of errors shown. Note this is not a complete listing, only a basic notation of common errors. Example is the lack of even mentioning rotated reverses. Error coin collecting is increasing in popularity lately and even the slightest errors are now selling for $1 or up at coin shows.
