I received an email from a long time customer today that kind of made me think. I wanted to share this with all of you. This person told me that he has looked to other dealers for low end material or seeking easy to answer questions because he felt I was somehow "above" this.

I am just simply a numismatist. While I have been very lucky to make a career out of what I love, and have been fortunate enough to have bought and sold some of the most beautiful and rare coins, I am more than that.

For anyone that has seen me on the bourse floors at a show, they know all to well that I still ooh and ahh like a young man viewing his first National Geographic.

I love coins of all denominations, metals, and states of preservation. I am fascinated by the worn examples and find myself wandering whom may have carried the piece and what items were bought with it.

With all that I have gained from years in this hobby what I am most honored and proud of is that I have made a few friends along the way. This is more special and rare than any coin or piece of currency that I have ever owned.

I think many buyers judge a dealer on the type of material he has. I wish this wasn't the case, but it does happen.

Let's face facts - you are an enigma as far as dealers are concerned. Most dealers that I have met that carry the extreme high-end coins don't want to take time for the "little guy". You have a genuine love of this hobby. Many dealers who sell similar items have grown past that love of the hobby. Please understand that this is just from my experience - not gospel.

Given the way you present yourself and always make time for everyone, I have to say that the misjudgement was on the part of your customer. And I hope you straightened him out right away!

Here, we all know that you are one of us. Yes, you bring a lot of experience and knowledge to our group and you have also had coins in your possession that most of us will only dream about, but we know you for what you are: just another coin nut who wants to contribute to the hobby
Rest in Peace

I just want to tell you a true story of how people preceive you. I had set up a table at the Fremont, CA coin show. I always took time to mke my table look the best and professional. I would lay down deep blue velvet under the silver coins and a deep maroon velvet ubder the copper ones. All my items had prices either on the single or a sign laying next to a group. All signs were made on the computer. All coins were in double pocket E.T. Kointain Flips with the history on the back.

In this one case the dealer next to me poured out about 1000 1992 silver eagles in his case and placed a handwritten sign on it $5.00. On a section of my blue velvet I put out 6 eagles laying front-back-front in two rows. Next to them a nicely printed sign saying 1992 Silver Eagles $7.25.

During the 3 day show I ran out of Eagles 4 times after buying a roll from the dealer next to each time. During the show he had sold only 3 eagles at $5.00 while I sold 48 at $7.25 each. He turned to me and said, "Steve, I generally don't do this but why were they buying eagles from you at $7.25 when they could have got them from me a $5.00..?" My response was, "Because mine were better..!"

The way you present yourself and the way you treat people is very important. I would have a cookie sheet at my table and would pour a bunch of common foreign coins in. Then whenever a kid would come to my table I would allow him to have 3 coins if he could find them in the world coin book. Of course I would help them. Because of this we sold a lot of coins to parents. Why? were preceived as kid friendly and nice people to work with.

Preception is important remember to think how you will be preceived when buying and selling coin.
