Hello,

I was wondering if someone has any reference on this irish mining token. I have found both obverse and reverse designs on several other tokens but I couldn't find one that had these two designs on one coin. (the other ones I found have one of these designs with a different obverse or reverse)

Thanks in advance

It is called a 'Conder token', named after James Conder, who made one of the most important catalogs.

I wonder if your token is a contemporary forgery.

There are two dates on your coin. The side with Hibernia ( woman with harp ) shows 1792 and the side with the shield has 1795. None of the Irish tokens in my books have two dates.

The digits of 1792 are in a straight line and quite crude in appearance. Images I have of this design show the digits on the date being curved following the rim of the token.

The whole token appears crudely made. The designs look worn, possibly made to look that way.

I could be wrong. Bell ( Commercial Coins 1787-1804 ) describes a chaotic situation with mules and forgeries aplenty.

Regards

I can not find it in the fakes in the catalog of Dalon & Hamer.
Can you read what is on the edge of the token?
But I was wrong in the catalog no. It is 373:
Associated Irish Miners Arms 1795
Here is that catalog: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...8/index.html
at the bottom right you enter page no 581.
You will find your token at the right page
Don't forget that there are thousends designs, with millions made

Petrus has it identified correctly Ireland Dublin 373. It was a contemporary forgery intended to pass in circulation. They were copies based on the legitimate tokens issued by the Hibernian Mine Company. Except for D&H 372 and 373 they show the same design as the HMCo except they use the initial RITCo. The RLTCo is fictitious and merely one of several initial combinations used on the circulating forgeries of the time (another combination was HSCo) The reverse die is a forged die used to make fake circulating tokens of the Irish Mine Company (D&H 55) The genuine Irish Mine company tokens are D&H 3 through 31. and say Irish Mine Company not Irish Miners Arms. D&H 373 is cosidered to be a common variety. Since they were crudely made and were intended to look worn the OP coin is actually a fairly high grade piece, possibly a VF or a little better.
