Hello all,

I just bought a silver coin in a small market for like 8€. I checked it online and it seemed like it could be a worth a lot more... It only says in English: "Kiang Nan Province - 7 Mace 2 Candareens", the rest is in chinese.
Can you tell me if this is even real?

Thanks so much for helping :)

This coin (and many other large, old silver coins) are commonly faked. I see similar fakes on a market I go to every week to get my fix. This one concerns me as the English lettering near the rim seems all over the place and see the 'x' on the chinese side? That's supposed to be a standing cross (might be intended, though I doubt it) and means '10'. This is without comparing this coin with known authentic pieces.

A good place to start is weighing it. It should weigh about 27 grams if authentic and thus made of silver.

Actually, that particular "x", with the tail at the bottom, is supposed to be a Chinese numeral "7"; this is the equivalent of the "7 mace 2 candareens" in Chinese. It is supposed to be "t" shaped, rather than "X" shaped.

It's still fake I'm afraid. Finding a genuine Chinese dollar in the street markets anywhere in the world these days is harder than finding a winning lottery ticket that someone has thrown away.

I have my suspicions that it is fake. I have an authentic kiangnan in my collection and the one pictured looks less sharp than a real one.

So, I went to the shop yesterday. The guy said it was fake before I even handed it to him but, after 5min examination, he said he wasn't sure anymore. The coin weights 26.25g, close to what it's supposed to weight new (26.8). He adviced I find a chinese coin specialist but I can't find any in Paris.
What would you advice?
