Seller probably doesn't know, looks like it's been in that 2x2 for quite some time.

Yep, that's a typical altered '44-D. I contacted the seller.
Rest in Peace

Why can't e-bay impose a fine for sellers listing altered or fake coins, whether the seller is aware of it or not. this will make the seller check the coins he's listing to make sure he doesn't get fined .the amount of the fine would have to be substantial so the seller wont think he can make it up by the sale of the coin.
Now you say , how is e-bay going to know the seller is listing an altered or fake coin. BY CCF MEMBERS reporting it to e-bay ! but only if 100% positive that it's a bad coin.

With all the altered 44Ds being sold on ebay, there is eventually going to be a shortage of 44Ds. I think I should start hording 44Ds now..

The sale was "ended by the seller due to an error in the listing". Well played.
