Hello everyone

What is everyone's thoughts on dipped coins ?
I've got this Barber dime the obverse is just way whiter and cleaner than any other AU barber I own...
It's graded AU 53 by NGC so that made me wonder what are the TPG views when it comes to dipping coins ?

I have never dipped a coin with the idea of presenting it better, which could lead on to an increase in value.

Perhaps it may be possible to increase the value by selling to less experienced collector, but for me, it ain't worth the risk.

Just learn for yourself how to spot dipped coins.
Rest in Peace

I would never dip a circulated coin. if you do it might be noticeably a cleaned coin.

Did NGC note it was dipped? The reverse looks like it was toned from an album. Are you sure it was cleaned?

Not sure if you guys fully understood what I was getting at ..
I was wondering what's TPG deemed acceptable when it came to dipped coins ..
I myself have never dipped a coin other than a quick rinse in acetone ..
The 1892 I posted photos of is graded au53 problem free ..
I purchased this coins a while back , didn't realize how blast white the obverse was till I had it in hand ..
Don't get me wrong I like the coin it has beautiful blue toning on the reverse and plenty of luster all around ...
If you lined this coin up with say a dozen other au50-53 barbers most would be dirty mottled over , while a few would have this cleaner look as if they had been dipped at one point ..
That made me think well what are their standards when it comes to dipped coins ?
I understand that dipping coins are a common thing among collectors and dealers ..

I belive that if it has a detectable trace of any cleaning agent, or hairline scratches due to cleaning it recives the dreaded deatails grade. Also, discoloration on copper coins is also a big red flag

TPG's have no issue with dipped coins as long as it was done properly. In fact, they ALL dip coins for you if requested.

Using acetone is not considered "dipping". Dipping is really a term reserved for using acid-thiourea type solutions, i.e. something that reacts quickly and harshly with the metal.
