1846 Seated Liberty dollar

Almost certain this is a fake (99.9%), however it looks like someone though it was real enough to bid $202.49 on it. Kudos to the seller for putting his suspicions in the description. In my opinion it looks a little more convincing than the laughably low end/poor quality Chinese counterfeits that we usually see.

What is CCF's verdict?

It's real I think.

Just looks like it might have been treated in acid based on the surfaces

Looks like a cast fake to me.

-Mushy details, which would be sharper on a struck coin.
-The ribbon is a real mess.
-The rim is awful below the date, and it looks like a casting line from below the date up to about 9 o'clock.
- Dubious date numerals. Compare this real one

Compared to this, the serif on the 4 is wrong, and the 1 and 6 look like freelance imitations. The lack of sharpness is also evident.

The seller states that the weight feels right, but that he/she has no scale to actually check it. Time to spend $5 on something worth buying from China.

Why someone would risk a couple hundred bucks on a fake? I like to give people the benefit of the doubt but it makes me think that an unethical seller can flip it for a lot higher if they reauction it as authentic. What is FMV for the authentic version of that coin in that condition? It may be something to look out for in the future. We can sick the dogs on him.

I don't like it. Here's a picture of mine for comparison:

1846-Seated-Dollar-On-Ebay---Real-Or-Fake?-Sombody-Bid-$200+

Note the die crack from the D in United to the second T in States. Also note the date style and position.

Someone either did a pretty good job in a die/mould transfer from a genuine 1846 dollar, or this coin is genuine. I see some diagnostics of a cast coin (bubbles around OF in the motto and the lower obverse rim and pits in between ONE DOLLAR), so I am leaning towards fake on this one.

I noticed there's a die crack from the D in United to the S of States.

I found a couple of examples in the Heritage Auction archive that display the same crack

What exactly are you asking? I said I don't like the surfaces. So that means it's either fake or something was done to it.
