The first one looks like a strong EF40 to me.

The second pic is a little blurrier. It looks like it has EF40 details, but I can't be sure. It may only be VF30. The blurriness makes it look like there's more wear.

Thanks Susan (is that right or do you prefer Susanlynn?)The first has a little more detail, but not much. The blurred photo does not help. I am still working on my photo skills. I will try and get a better picture. I also have another I have not photographed yet, but the detail is not as good. I am thinking of completing a third Buffalo nickel book. I have most but not all of the Buffalo nickels I need for the third book. No 1918D 8/7 nickels though.

I Think the first one is an XF-40, , I just think there is a little too much wear on the braid and Buffs shoulder to make a 45 .

But the second looks like it hits more in the mid VF to me VF-30

In my opinion I think that they both are in the VF-35 range. The tip of the tail is not visable on either coin and the tip of the horn is weak. The braids on both are flat but have good detail and above the ear is flat also.

I attributed the appearance of the obverse of the first one more to strike than wear! the date is strong and the detail feathers are still showing, I dont see the area above the braid as flat but more without detail.

The second one could be a product of the picture, even though I can make out a little more detail in the area above the braid ,the coin looks worn with less eye appeal than the first .

I'm by no means an expert on this sort of thing, but I think I would say VF for both coins too. The reason is that when I see the term EF I always think I should see some, even a little, mint luster present, and on these I don't see any, though it is hard to tell from the photos. Also, when someone asks me for a grading opinion, (though as I said, I'm by no means any kind of an expert!) I always tend to look at it from the standpoint of myself as a potential buyer. I'm thinking, if I were to resell the coin, what would a potential buyer point out as the coins's weaknesses?
