thoughts on this one:

year 2000 should be plated steel @ 3.95g magnetic.

this one's weight is 4.55 g (falls into range of 1982-1999 planchets), non magnetic

minute pitting (can only be seen with 10x loupe) - likely from the year 2000 plating over steel preparation process?

question:

IF struck on a 1982-1999 planchet (according to wiki they are known to be out there in 2000, 2001, 2006) would this be best described as an off metal strike, wrong planchet, wrong planchet missing plating or ?

or is it still considered a 'production' planchet with no real premium?

rarity and approximate value?

opinions and feedback appreciated

2000 nickels (no P) were also produced in copper/nickel at 4.6 grams and are more common than the P version in steel.

bummer,

mint.ca only shows the plated version for 2000 & up

so it's basically just an ugly nickel... oh well, at least someone did a nice job of stripping the plating

These "no P" nickels aren't plated, but made out of a solid cupronickel alloy. The discolouration you see is most likely corrosion from environmental damage.

a very good chance this was a metal detecting find, I've found many just like it and put them back into circulation.

based on the nearly microscopic pitting/bubbles, and composition, I'm convinced that it's environmental (stained cupro-nickel).

I was thrown by mint.ca claiming that 2000 issues where all plated steel, and thought maybe I had a planchet from a previous year (turns out the majority of them are).
