I dropped into a cash for gold place yesterday and they had a 1899S $10 gold piece. It has been cleaned but was probably au condition. He offered it to me for 600. What do you think price? I have no bearing on cleaned coin prices, ebay seems to be all over the place and any numismatic pricing is based off a problem free coin. I come to you for a little help. I realise a clean coin is not ideal but what price makes it worth it?

Offer $500. I personally wouldn't go over $550 but it's your choice.

Personaly, I would wait to buy a problem free coin but it all depends on eye appeal. Did the cleaning just leave the coin without luster and barely noticeable hairlines, or did it make the coin look like it was rubbed with steel wool?

A bit above melt would be a fair offer.

It's a little high for a bullion coin but he has overhead. It depends on whether you want to cut him a break on that. Check the weight, it should be 16.7 grams.

Foreign gold sells closer to bullion price.

Yeah, that won't do anything, especially for a gold coin.

Make your decision based on the $U.S. gold price against other currencies.
For instance, the $AUD gold price has gone nowhere in particular in the last four years, being around $AUD 1,550 + or - $50 or thereabouts.

The other day I saw an 1899-S Eagle, AU details, cleaned, on Heritage- it sold in the vicinity of $480-$490, including BP.

Gold has a price pop lately. I heard some analyst say it is going to $2000 an ounce. If it does I will beg my wife to sell the gold stuff I bough her years ago that she never wears including the mandatory tennis bracelet and 18K gold chain I bought her on which to hang a locket. I, (I mean We), could buy some nice Morgans with that money.
