I was going through a box of dimes today and I came across this American dime, from the edge it didn't look silver but neither did it look clad. When I took it out, the surfaces are the colour of a worn down penny.

When testing for different characteristics of the coin I decided to test the sound difference between the silver, clad, and this one. All three sounds were different tones.

when compared to the diameter of a american penny, it is a few millimetres smaller, but fits perfectly on top of another dime.

Im wondering if anyone has heard of this happening on this date and mint mark, and any possible values.

Sadly I dont have any pictures of this coin, but I can assure you that all the above information is true.

Thank you for all your help,

Johnny

1988 pennies are made from copper plated zinc, haven't seen many get that old penny look that the copper ones do. Try weighing it and also sending a picture!

Also, can dimes even be struck on penny planchets? I thought the plachet has to be smaller than the collar

From the description it is almost certainly an environmentally damaged coin.

Hey, John1 the coin looks almost exactly like the first image/link. Just not in as good as condition obviously, but it definitely looks exactly like that. Its diameter is smaller than the cents planchet, its diameter is the exact same as a dime and I don't have weight on it yet but I definitely will do that!
