Proof coin or business strike. Well pictures would help but it depends on a lot. If it is more recent it will have a S mintmark on the coin and have some sort of "cameo". Referring to the contrast of the field and frosted devices. If it is a proof set from the mint it should be in an enclosed case . What year proof set are we looking at ?

Are you confusing a Proof type coin as a grade of coin? Proof strikes are made with different dies than business strikes. If it is in a proof set, and has an S mint mark, no matter what condition it is in, it is still a proof coin. If it has been damaged, it is an impaired proof.

What you need to do is look around for a hobby store or coin store and purchase what is called a Red Book by Whitman Publishing. In it you will find out what a Proof, Uncirc, etc. coin is. Yours could or could not be Proofs.

See your going to have to be specific because they have mint sets and the have proof sets. If your only getting cents they probably aren't in a set. Also from 1968 to 1974 the San Francisco mint produced a business strike and a proof. You should be able to tell by the cameo like I explained.

There were no "S" mint pennies/cents made from
1956 through 1967.
