I would appreciate your help with grading and value on this. I am considering purchasing it. It is in a PCI holder. The scratch on the reverse is on the holder. I will reveal the grade, but would appreciate your opinion on grade and value first. Also any comments on PCI grading quality.

Thanks for yor help. I really appreciate it.

If I was selling this coin raw, I'd grade it at Good+ G6. I think PCI graded it as VG8.

Completed auctions on ebay show:

ANACS Certified AG3 - $312.99
PCI Certified G4 - $172.45
Raw G4 - $381.99
Raw VG10 - 420.87
Raw (Called VF in auction, actual VG10) - $420.87

All grades on raw coins are my opinion based on blowing up the pics. Keep in mind that I grade conservatively and not by the new 2006 standards. (Sorry, I'm stubborn that way. )

Notice that the ANACS slabbed lower grade brought more money than PCI. While PCI is more than a fly-by-night by company, it is still not considered to be one of the most respected. My suggestion would be to purchase it at G6 value and then break it out and submit to one of the top 3 (ANACS, NGC, or PCGS). My personal preference is always ANACS as I feel the grades are much more accurate than the other two and the submission fees are very reasonable.

I would agree with Susan on this one. The reverse is what bring it down to G-6 instead of VG-8
Rest in Peace

JPerry,

The Liberty nickel is one of my specialities. This one would grade as a Good, damaged. As far as the value goes I would say that I wouldn't pay more than $100.00 for it.

Sorry Guys but I'm going to disagree!!

This coin IMHO makes a VG-8 in all criteria,I can easily read ert of Liberty, and the reverse, although the rim is not complete, it appears to have been a bit of a tipped planchet, and not so much wear that caused it !!

the obverse shows an obvious off center strike, resulting in a weakness to the right on the reverse .

Catman

By damage I'm assuming your talking about the scratch on the reverse ?

If so I'm not sure thats on the coin .

Hey Catman, why would you rate this as a damaged Good? The OP stated that the scratch is on the holder.

The reason I don't rate it a full VG is that, although the ERT can be read, portions of those letters are missing.

The scratch on the holder per the seller.

Here is the comment from the seller. Based on your comments I think I will pass unless you think otherwise. Please let me know if you have any other comments. Thanks.

1885 5c PCI (gold) Good/4 Key date with a full ERTY visible on the band, and part of the B. Strong obv. detail with a weaker reverse. $460

I personally don't think that the price or the grade is out of line.

It looks like PCI graded it conservatively. I disagree with the seller's description unless the letters in LIBERTY are much clearer than in the pics. If all of those letters were visible, the coin would have graded at least a VG8. I maintain that I would be willing to pay G6 money for it. I believe that would put it around half of what the seller is asking. My advice: wait for a better one to come along.

Thanks for your help and the good advice. I am going to wait. Also, I don'tlike the dark area on the reverse.

Susan, thanks for a great site.

Just curious what price guide you are useing to say that the sellers price is half again to much? My greysheet says $420 ask and my other price guide says $520. Just curious.

Just reread post and see that you look on ebay auctions.

You're right. I don't know where I got that dollar figure. Please chalk it up to chemo brain. At least I'm sure about the grade I gave it!
