I took the 1971D Ike Clamshell error to the FUN show and showed it to Fred Weinberg & Arnie Margolis. Both agreed that it was a true mint error worth "a few hundred dollars" perhaps more to anyone specializing in Ike errors. Here's a few pictures of it.

I'll guess you didnt point out the little scratches that indicate the coin had help. Did you ask about them and what did they say.

They said that it probably was pryed open a little more, but still a nice mint error. They both looked at it pretty carefully before rendering an opinion.

amac,

You missed the original thread where I marked most of the marks with small arrows. There were quite a few.

So how much did you pay for it in case I come across one?

Despite what has been said about value. Any coin of this type that did have help , which has been confirmed...has no value to a collector.
The right amount of heat on the right coin and the use of a small screw driver can create one of these. This coin is interesting but only of value to a person who doesn't have expertise in the error field.

Also, I'll say it here...I have a hard time fathoming that Fred or Mr. Margolis would offer an opinion on value to you on a coin that they said had some help. The scenario is beyond comprehension. I might be wrong but they wouldnt call a tampered with coin a nice error, in my humble opinion. Both of those people have too much of a reputation to go out on a limb on that kind of a coin, again, in my humble opinion.
