I usually post nice looking coins. My Dad finally located and gave me my grandfather's "pocket piece". It's my NEW FAVORITE COIN and so I thought I'd share. I remember my grandpa (he passed away in 1996) pulling this Morgan out when I was a kid to flip it for head/tails whenever my brothers and I needed a decision. My dad said grandpa used to use it back when he was a kid too! Grandpa used to say that it would give a "clear cut answer...either 'this' or 'this' so there's no second guessing or dispute". My Grandpa was an "Ice Man" from mid-1910s through the 1940s. Before there were refrigerators, each house had "ice box". An ice box was just that, it was a box that you would have to put several big 50 to 100 pound blocks of ice into the floor of the box to keep things cold and he was the one that delivered those ice blocks to the residences daily! Though we are not sure when he actually first started carrying this Morgan, (my dad was born in 1941), we can imagine him carrying ice up flights of stairs with this coin in his pocket, if it could only talk! Since his passing occasionally, I wondered what happened to it since grandpa was living with my aunt and uncle 90 miles away from us when he passed. So I asked dad about it because I wanted it if it was still around. I'm the oldest of 3 so I figure I should get first dibs! and he said he'd look for it. Below are pictures of my family heirloom. I know it's worn out but I think it has a lot of character and sentimental value to me. I plan on giving it to my son on his 18th birthday so my Grandpa's memory will continue to live on through this Morgan for many more generations! Thanks Pawpaw for this piece of you! I MISS HIM! Great story and congrats...What I like about the coin and the story is that the story is truly an American story and what grabs you about the coin is truly American..."Liberty" and "In God We Trust".

Nice story. You cannot put a monetary value on a coin like that.

Reminds me of my Grandmother's lucky nickel. She was born in 1894 and , as a ten year old girl found a Shield nickel and kept it all her life. It is worn and not worth much, but priceless to me. I miss her. Thanks for the story!

My grandmother was born in 1899 also. I put together a year set of 1898 (I had the year wrong) and gave it to my mom for Christmas. She loved it even though I had the year wrong (my grandmother passed away in 1984 and I don't have the greatest memory). It is interesting to imagine she might have actually had those same coins at one time (I picked coins in the F-AU range).
I am now working on a 1899 year set - luckily both years are fairly common and you can easily make a nice looking set for well under $100. No reason not to start a new hierloom!
