I guess this question is directed to those of you who are experienced with using acetone on coins and people who break out modern mint set coins for the purpose of completing sets. For the newer mint sets--say 2007 forward that are in the new hard plastic bubble packaging--is it really necessary to give them an acetone bath before putting in an album, air-tite, etc? I understand the benefits of using acetone on coins coming from circulation or perhaps even older mint sets that have some haze from the packaging. I'm just not sure ifs necessary or overkill for newer coins that haven't really been exposed to circulation or improper storage. I guess if you want specifics I would be breaking out new ATB mint and proof quarters for an airtites album. I'm trying to due my due diligence and protect the coins best for the long run but just not sure if the acetone bath is worth the extra effort in this case.

Thanks

I say yes, I acetone all coins I remove from all US Mint holders. I cut a part a 1990 uncirc set in 1990, and put the "P" coins into a holder as is, then took "D" mint coins and gave them a acetone bath, then put them into a holder. I still have both holders, and the "D" coins look much better than the "P" coins. both were put into a 5-coin Whitman "snap" year-type holders.

All planchets are given a like coating of oil before striking to help them move through the feeding equipment without jamming or sticking. So the finished coins will also have a film of oil on them as well. So acetone might not be a bad idea.

I've very rarely not used acetone before Airtite storage. It's just good practice, the mint gets fingerprints and various impurities in those sets.

I've only use stuff like Acetone on coins if suspected to have something on them that Acetone will get rid of.
Acetone is just one item that people have gone a bit overboard on usage. The main thing to remember is if you don't use it frequently, don't have other uses for it and not a great place to store it, could be dangerous and a waste of money.
Sort of like getting a 5,000 gallon underground tank for gasoline in case the prices get to high.
