We have a collection of US coins - 19th and 20th century gold and silver as well as a very decent Morgan group, all graded by PCGS and NGC w a few "details" from ANACS. Now we need to sell a good number of them possibly all although the market seems to be feeling a little uncertain this month. I would appreciate any recommendations on where to sell these coins. I like auctions. They're fair and market driven. Dealers would be okay for a small number of coins but this is a good sized collection, and we can't afford to take the loss. I've sold a number of coins on ebay - I've been selling on there for years - many different collectables at various times and I've done okay, have a good reputation because I give honest descriptions and lots of images but lately ebay doesn't back up sellers at all. I can handle a small scale loss but when there's a valuable item at stake, the loss can be too substantial, not to mention the destruction of a reputation. I don't know how some of you guys do it but I know some of you do - I see beautiful coins for sale at the appropriate price and I often wonder how in heaven's name you do it and not get an ulcer. I still sell but won't risk anything valued over a hundred or so. Any and all recommendations would really be most helpful. Thank you in advance.

I'd recommend contacting Ian @ GreatCollections with a list and see what he suggests. Mid-tier auction house might be just what the Dr ordered...

Thank you both. Someone else mentioned Heritage to me - I'll have to do some research on them. And I will definitely contact Ian. Again, thank you.

I'm afraid that's not doable as they're in a safety deposit box. obviously when the time comes to sell, they come out but right now, it would be impractical, not to mention - they're heavy! it's a sm/med collection of over a 100 coins.

I would suggest GreatCollections as well. They have a lower selling fee than ebay, and there customer service is terrific.

I'd like to add this: While I appreciate any help offered in regards to who I might contact, I'd hesitate to post a list of the collection. I'll discuss them privately and in detail but I don't feel comfortable placing the entire collection online. It's not a multi million dollar collection or anything like that but what we have is valuable to us.
I'm sure I appear paranoid. And I probably am. :)

Sell the coins under a $500 value on ebay with a starting auction price that you would accept for the coin. You can check the completed listings to get an idea of a starting price. If the coins are $500 to $1000, Great collections is fine and you can also have a starting reserve price. The only issue with Great Collections is the auction software is a little funky. They have a new version of software that is to be release shortly. ebay is also an option for this price range. For coins over $1000 Heritage is the only way to go and you should tie in your coins with a major coin show like the recent Long Beach Heritage Auction. The buyer fee is steep at 17.5%, but the exposure for high end coins is excellent.

Great Collections and Heritage is the way to go then! I could tell my ebay selling coins can be a nightmare story - everyone has at least one - I've sold a lot of coins there but recently I had my worst experience occur. Fortunately it wasn't a costly coin. But while that matters in an important way, it doesn't matter in another. I consider coins precious works of art. And they get rarer as time goes on. And I had an idiot buy one of mine. And that was it for me with coins and ebay. Too many nuts now. Maybe I've been there too long, I don't know. Re: Heritage I noticed the buyer fees when I was checking out Heritage today. They do okay for themselves, their images are sterling and it looks to me as if they have a solid reputation. Thank you.

For coins sold over $1,000; GreatCollections doesn't charge a sellers fee.

thank you. yes indeed, I think I'm on the right track now. Heritage looks good and I'm about to send a note to Ian.
I wish I could participate in this forum as I used to on the google coin collector forum that disappeared one day but we're on the downsize end of this now and there will be no more coins for us for a long while (except a few I'll try to hold back - like the little CA octagon). I love some of these coins but other things are more important right now.
THANK YOU ALL TRULY.

So many forget to say that. My suggestion is as long as you are well versed with ebay, stick to that.

If you do decide to use Great Collection to save a little money on fees, their sales on high end coins can often be just as good as Heritage. Attached is an example of a bidding war gone crazy at Great Collections a couple weeks ago. One would think the coin should have sold for around 4K at the high end. http://www.greatcollections.com/Coi...st-Gen-Toned

what a stunning coin. in an old slab. life is good.
I think I'll put together a little package to send to Great Collections - a mixed bag and see how it goes. Thanks for all the advice.
ONE LAST THING: Can someone offer the namebrand of a good paper tape - either it's the glue or maybe there's a paper tape that doesn't require water. I can't handle that stuff and always - without fail - end up with sodden lumpy boxes looking like deformed mummys with none of the edges laying down. It's worrisome.
