im thinking about starting metal detecting and I want to know what I all need. I have a budget of $500 and I would not like to go over. also, do you need to get permission before detecting in public parks?

Try an AT Pro, a bit over budget, but great overall detector. Park detecting rules vary.

I agree with Osprey, that ATpro is the flavor of the year it seems - even tho I swing Minelab. As far as parks go, use the internet to research the local parks dept, as far as legal issues are concerned.
