Hey guys, 2 of my medals show the same effect on the reverse lettering. What is this?... At first I thought it might be "flat field doubling" I remember reading about from a Mike diamond article but I just looked it up again and it doesn't quite appear so as well as mike saying FFD is restricted to proofs. So I'm stumped. It also kinda looks like severe pullaway on a morgan toner. The thing that also strikes me as odd is that on the lower letters the "doubling" is above the letters and on the larger letters above it is below the letters like metal was being pushed to the center during the strike?

Any thoughts?

These appear to be design extension dimples:

The cause remains uncertain.

Great mike, thanks. That appears to be what it is. Is this example, being on a medal, unique? Could it warrant a designation like Fred's?

Interesting read at the link.

I did not notice them on mine, but I still need to examine it closer.

You can see it if looking in hand at the roght angle but it jumps out at you with a 10x loupe.

I'm starting to think odd coins seem to find me rather than me finding them

We have seen "dimples" on various coins, mostly of EDS to EMDS. It was first discovered by Fred Weinberg who also thought that they were "trails". I had those examples encapsulated by ICG.

While it is an interesting anomaly, I believe that just about all EDS coins have this affect and that as the die ages, it does disappear (dimples).

As to the cause, I have little to no idea. All I do know that it is a radial anomaly and points inward. Since it is recessed on the coin, it is raised on the die giving thought that it maybe pushed metal from the hubbing ?

I do welcome any ideas on how this anomaly comes into being.

I took a real close look at mine today with the 10x loupe and I still do not see anything like this.

I'm thinking these are the only true kennedy medals that actually deserve an FS label, no?
