I use the Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins to judge prices for historic European coin listings on ebay. Is there a similar guide for historic European medals?

See British Commemorative Medals and their Values by Christopher Eimer, published by Spinks. It is a beautiful book but with only an edition of 2000 copies. Also see the series by Michael Mitchner. Again these are beautiful but expensive books. Volume 1 covers Jetons, Medalets, and Tokens of the Medieval Period and Nuremberg. Volume 2 covers Jetons, Medalets, and Tokens of the Low Countries and France. Volume 3 covers the British Isles circa 1558 to 1830.

There are many excellent books covering European medals. However, most are specific to a particular country or time period. To my knowledge, there is currently no all inclusive book of European medals. And Eimer's book, which is focused on medals of Britain, is the only one I'm aware of that lists values.

It should also be understood that official records of number and type of medals minted are very limited in most cases. As such, most books on medals are based on a particular collection from a museum or collector's cabinet rather than official records. Thus, while available books often include a large number of representative medals, they should not be viewed as absolutely comprehensive.

If you like French Art Nouveau medals of the late 19th and early 20th century I have found Nicolas Maier's French Medallic Art 1870-1940 to be very informative and an enjoyable read.

I have really enjoyed my time spent studying medals and would be happy to suggest other books or tips if you favor a particular region or era.

Thank you all for the wonderful replies! British Commemorative Medals and their Values looks like an amazing book, I'll have to start saving up to get a copy someday.

With regards to particulars, I have recently gotten into the Exonumia section on ebay so the medals I see are from all over Europe and hence my question about an all-inclusive guide. I think I'll focus on Britain, France, and Germany since they seem to be most represented. I also like the older medals (pre 1800) if that helps any.

That's the book I was thinking of, but couldn't remember the title. I want a copy of this someday.

Another guide for British medals is Lawrence Brown's British Historical Medals comprised of three volumes.

Maier's French Medallic Art 1870-1940 that I previously mentioned would be a good guide for medals of France. There are also some good online resources related to edge marks of Monnaie de Paris. A search for medals edge marks or medals edge-markings should yield something.

Of the books I'm aware of related to German medals, they tend to be focused on specific subjects such as medals of WWI or the medals of Karl Goetz rather than a longer period or more general review of German issues.

Hope this helps.
