Acquired this coin earlier today; Gordian III AR Antoninianus.

Agree with seller's attribution, RIC (IV) 148 -- bust right, PROVID AVG reverse.

I am not a frequent collector of ancient Roman coins so would appreciate any thoughts on condition and authenticity. 4.2 grams. I do not have any reason to doubt the seller, but I tend to be cautious when dealing with ancients.

Thanks for looking. AB

Central strike, clear detail, a very nice example of Gordian III.

Thank you for the information, Paul & Topcat. :) I have a small felt display case for my "huge" ancient collection, currently only occupied by a VF silvered AE Aurelian antoninianus (RIC III 225), and a very beat up Constantine I AE follis that was in a 10 cent world coin bin at a coin shop years ago. If I win the lottery someday I'll buy quite a few more Emperors to fill it up.

The aquisition of an antoninianus of Gordian 111
is arguably the best introduction to Roman numismatics,
in terms of value for money.

I paid $20 for it at auction. (Not like there's a price guide for these, so I hope that's a fair price.) The RIC 225 Aurelian was $42.50 purchased in 1996 in New Orleans, the dealer card grades it VF. It has most of the silvering remaining. I need to take some pictures of it at some point.
