I sent a message to Eric, who sells uncleaned coins on ebay under the seller's ID "purse_of_the_legionary", and he responded that ebay has shut down all listings of uncleaned coins.

He thinks it is because of reports of ISIS looting.

Here's what he wrote back to me:

"Yes, they removed everything related to "uncleaned" coins. I believe it's related to ISIS looting and refugees. I can't post any link here I think, but I invite you to search on Google for the keywords ISIS + looting + ebay, you'll find pages or interesting articles from last March and April. I think the answers are there.

I may be wrong, but I can't see any other reason why ebay shut down thousands of listings. They usually end items because of a complaint, or because they are forced to. ebay isn't the type to loose money, they should have pressure somewhere. Right before Holiday shopping, they probably want to avoid more headlines stating they allow ISIS to move the looted artifacts and coins. They probably link "uncleaned" with "freshly excavated", with ISIS looting."

One more note on this thread: I checked ebay UK and ebay France and they are still filled with listings for uncleaned coins.

So it seems, at least for now, buyers in the US can still buy uncleaned coins from Europe, but US sellers (and Canadian) cannot sell uncleaned coins as long as they mention they are uncleaned and do not list information on provenance.

I think?

i see that some a few listings are back up, some have a "statement of provenance" with the listing. I can't find in writing exactly what the new rules for meeting provenance is however...i would I'm curious to know what it is.

I wonder if the concern over provenance was a passing thing. Anyone see anything about provenance in this lot?
