Hello from the UK I have just purchased this 1723 rosa americana penny and I would welcome your thoughts as I haven't seen one before. I have a ' Red Book' but it doesn't give a great deal of information on these. I'm pretty sure it's authentic as it weighs 8.75 grammes and has a diameter of 26/27 mm (measured with a tape). Also happy to hear any ideas of grading and/or value. Thanks Ed

I know very little about these, but hope to own one someday. According to the PCGS on Photograde, it looks to be a solid VF. The pricing varies, but it's worth at least $100 imo, and maybe up to $200. You can check ebay and Heritage archives to narrow the price a bit better.

Colonials just aren't as cut and dried as more modern coins, where coin X in X condition is worth $XXX. It really depends on how many people want the coin at that particular time. Rosa Americana coins sometimes tend to be kind of black and bubbly due to the minting technique and metal composition. Nice smooth pieces with nice color definitely command a premium, yours shows some of this black bubbling, but not too bad. Rosa Americanas are an interesting series that don't get too much attention. Nice coin, enjoy it!

Thanks everyone
I am very pleased with it and it is definitely staying in my collection. Reading up on the Woods coinage I love the history behind it too.
The best part about it (for me) is the fact that I bagged it from a well known auction site for only £2 ($3) as it had been listed in the wrong category, and I was the only bidder!

OK, I spent a little time with Syd Martin's book on the Rosa Americana coins, and I believe yours is a 2.41-Eb.15 which is an R4 variety. R4 translates to 76-200 examples known.

Thanks again for the information and comments.
A question for lcutler, regarding the variety and rarity (2.41-Eb.15, R4), does that mean that mine is rarer than some types, or are they all equally rare?

Rarer than some, but fairly common as Rosas go, the scale ranges from R1- more than 1250 known up to R9 with only one known. I am not sure if there are any rosas more common than R3 though. Of course this doesn't take into account the many coins that are unattributed.
