Okay, so I have a complete collection of Presidential bronze medals as produced by the U.S. Mint, both the three-inch medals and the 1 5/16-inch versions. As each new President is elected, I patiently wait until the U.S. Mint offers the new medals. Of course, I'm still waiting on the medals for Mr. Obama.

I've read that there are no official Presidential medals for President Obama because Mr. Obama simply never followed up with the U.S. Mint to have the medals created. I'm perfectly fine with this, since it's his decision whether he wants a U.S. medal created for his presidency.

My only question is: Will future generations understand why there is a U.S. Mint medal for every president, except Mr. Obama?

If you're not familiar with the Presidential series of medals produced by the U.S. Mint, here is the webpage:

http://catalog.usmint.gov/medals/presidential/

As you can see, many of the later presidents even had separate medals for each term that they served. There are plenty of unofficial privately-produced Obama coins and medals out there, but when will folks start noticing that the U.S. Mint series is incomplete?

That is strange. I never followed Presidential medals, but I'm curious: when have other Presidential medals been released? Were President George W. Bush's two medals produced and released while he was still in office?

Perhaps President Obama is waiting until after his term is up?

I suppose that is a possibility, Atlas642; he may feel such medals are too trivial to spend time on at the present.
I also wonder if the U.S. Mint is authorized to go ahead and just create such medals once the President leaves office, with or without his approval/assistance.

I am curios too Atlas as to when the W. medals came out.

"Produced to honor our nation's past presidents..."

He is still the current commander in chief. Maybe it will come out after who ever takes office.

From 1958 through 1963, a previously unknown series of Presidential medals were awarded by the sitting President of the United States (President Eisenhower and President Kennedy). Of these 22 newly discovered/documented presidential medals, there are 6 bronze issues.

Here is the book that discusses these medals.

These are the Class 5 Presidential medals struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia. Total mintage for JFK-C5-02 is 300. JFK-C5-01 is unique.

There is a new thinking of these presidential medals. The design elements of Frank Gasparro was reused by him.

I did update the wikipedia article of the Kennedy half-dollar (large images in-place for JFK-C5-02) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_half_dollar

An image of the Eisenhower appreciation medal (with torches) can be seen at the President Eisenhower wikipedia page (in the Tributes and memorials Section and to the right).
